We are pleased to offer a rare example of the Bentley Turbo RT, produced for only a brief period from 1997 to 1998 and representing the final and most powerful evolution of Bentley’s long-running Turbo R line. Serving as a luxurious farewell to the classic SZ-series platform introduced in the 1980s, the Turbo RT received a number of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades over its predecessors. Its 6.75-litre turbocharged V8 was tuned to deliver significantly more power and torque, paired with improved suspension and handling refinements that emphasised both performance and grand-touring comfort. Distinguished by subtle visual cues - such as its mesh grille and unique badging - the Turbo RT was built in very limited numbers, making it one of the rarest modern Bentleys. As the last of the true hand-built Crewe turbo saloons, it holds a special place in the brand’s history, bridging classic craftsmanship with the emerging performance focus that would define Bentley in the decades to follow.
This 1998 Bentley Turbo RT LWB in Royal Blue with Soft Tan Hide interior was first registered in January 1998 and was supplied by Broughtons of Birmingham. It has had seven previous keepers. We don’t have the original service book but it comes with a small bundle of receipts for parts and maintenance.
Royal Blue is a superb colour for a big Bentley - sophisticated and, dare we say it, a touch regal. The dark hue sets off some of the nice RT-specific styling features such as the mesh grilles and the sporty five-spoke alloy wheels. There are some age-related marks on the paint and a few small bubbles here and there. The tan leather in the cabin is the perfect accompaniment to the exterior, set off by a Royal Blue top roll on the dash and dark blue carpets. It presents very nicely with just a bit of patina to the driver’s seat and cracking to the wood cappings on the rear passenger doors to give away its age. In some examples this could be a problem, but in a Bentley it kind of adds to its appearance and makes it a nice and palatial place to be. It’s pleasing to see that the plush and luxurious lambswool rugs are still in place as they so often go missing over the years. As you would expect of a Bentley, the specification is really high and this example benefitted from options such as folding door mirrors, reversing aid, sat nav and three additional gauges on the dash in lieu of the ashtray. The Bentley comes with V5C, advisory-free MOT certificate, some old MOTs, a clear HPi certificate, invoices and BOOM search (full specification sheet).
Sharing its 400bhp motor with the Continental T, the Turbo RT was a fitting swansong for the long-lived Mulsanne - the car that reinvigorated the Bentley brand. Combine that with the low numbers produced and it makes the RT very collectible. With a few bits to do and offered without reserve, this example represents a great opportunity to use, improve and add value.
